Clerk of the Scales

The Job: Join them in this vital role, and you’ll be playing a big part in upholding the integrity of the sport. Working in the nerve centre of the racecourse, you’ll make sure all the rules and requirements of racing are being strictly adhered to in the Weighing Room – the place where all Jockeys are weighed before and after the race. What’s more, you’ll also be at the heart of the communications network on the course, providing advice and information to racegoers and people in the industry alike.

The Person: Complete integrity is essential in this position. You’ll also need to be a thorough and meticulous person with very high standards of accuracy. Of course, you’ll be able to stay calm and cool and maintain an atmosphere of relaxed efficiency in the Weighing Room, too. Finally, you’ll need to have superb communication skills and a really approachable personality.

Judge

The Job: It doesn’t get much more exciting than a racecourse on race day. And you’ll be right at the heart of the action, as you judge and announce the placings in each race at assigned meets around the country. It’s a responsible role. From analysing the photo finish to announcing the winners on the public address system, you’ll provide a true record of every race.

The Person: Obviously, integrity is absolutely essential. You’ll also need superb levels of concentration and the ability to take accurate decisions under pressure.

Entry Requirements: Good colour vision, a superb visual memory and a very clear speaking voice are essential. You’ll also need to be confident that you’ll be able to master the photofinish system after training.

Starter

The Job: Working at racecourses in the electric atmosphere of race day, you’ll be in charge of ensuring all goes smoothly – and fairly – at the start of the race. In charge of all horses, riders and racecourse personnel, you’ll make sure all preparations are performed swiftly and safely. And that the race starts bang on time. From reporting wayward Jockeys to the Steward, to keeping an accurate record of everything from withdrawn horses to starting times, you’ll make sure things run like clockwork.

The Person: Whatever happens, you never lose your cool. Calm, collected and authoritative, you can command the respect of a large number of riders (and horses!) even under the glare of the media spotlight. You also have the highest levels of integrity.

Entry Requirements: You’ll need enough knowledge of racing and horses to gain the respect of the Jockeys.

Stewards’ Secretary

The Job: Travelling to racecourses round the country, it will be your job to make sure that the race meeting runs smoothly – and within all the rules of racing. Working closely with local Stewards and the racecourse management, you’ll ensure everything goes like clockwork. With your encyclopaedic knowledge of all the rules of racing, you’ll be ready to step into any of the British Horseracing Authority's officials’ shoes where necessary.

The Person: You’ll be working with everyone from Stewards to Trainers, Jockeys to Racecourse employees, so you’ll need great interpersonal skills. You also have the kind of confidence and presence that command real respect.

Entry Requirements: You should have worked extensively in racing, ideally having ridden in races or worked in some capacity that gave you an in-depth knowledge of the way races develop.

Inspector of Courses

The Job: You’ll make sure that Courses are as safe as is humanly possible for both horse and rider. As an official of the British Horseracing Authority, you’ll liaise closely with racecourses, ensuring they’re complying with all safety and integrity rules when it comes to racing surfaces. You’ll inspect point-to-points, too. Finally, you’ll visit each of your assigned racecourses before the season starts and ensure that everything from fences to racing surfaces, hurdles to stables comply with British Horseracing Authority Instructions.

The Person: Highly credible, you command respect. What’s more, your strong relationship building skills will allow you to get real results.

Entry Requirements: You’ll need a good understanding of areas such as turf maintenance and fence construction. In addition, you’ll need a good understanding of racing. An agricultural background, combined with experience as a Jockey or Trainer would be ideal.

Investigating Officer

The Job: As part of the field force you’ll conduct a range of investigations that uphold the integrity of horseracing in the UK. From enquiries on behalf of the Licensing Committee to the completion of detailed investigation reports, it’s a varied role.

The Person: You’ll need integrity, an enquiring mind, excellent communication skills and discretion. As you’ll be working from home, you also need to be highly self-motivated. In addition, you should be a collaborative person who can work well with the police and other law enforcement agencies.

Entry Requirements: Previous investigative experience gained in a regulatory or enforcement body is required.

Stable Guard

The Job:
You’ll help protect the highly valuable thoroughbred horses that lie at the heart of the horseracing industry. Working for the British Horseracing Authority in one of three regional teams, you’ll prevent horses being tampered with whilst they are at the racecourse. From patrolling the yard to monitoring the CCTV and recording all admissions to the Stables, you’ll ensure all the horses are safe and sound.

The Person: Complete integrity and the ability to command respect are important. You should also be a good team player who can work well with other Stable Guards, including casual workers who are bought in during busy periods. You’ll also be happy to file simple reports.

Entry Requirements: No official qualifications are required. You may have been in the mounted police, worked with horses in the military or have been a Head Lad or other member of the Stable Staff.

Sponsorship Compliance Officer

The Job: Working on major race days which are being televised and transmitted to millions of viewers, you’ll be in charge of making sure all advertising on Jockeys’ silks, attendants’ clothing and horses' paddock sheets follows the appropriate rules. You’ll make sure that all advertising complies with the British Horseracing Authority's code of conduct and the British Advertising Codes of Practice. And when it doesn’t, you’ll bring the breaches to the attention of the Stewards' Secretary.

The Person: You’re polite and personable, but you also command respect, and can be firm whilst enforcing regulations. You’ll also need to be happy working part-time, as these are not normally full time roles.

Entry Requirements: It would be useful if you’ve had experience of dealing with the public.

Stable Inspecting Officer

The Job: As part of the Security Department, you’ll make sure that all the facilities at training yards throughout the UK are safe, secure and promote the welfare of the horses. From the stables and the tack room to the staff, you’ll look into everything. Whether you’re carrying out interviews, inspecting premises or writing reports, you’ll use your expertise in every area from health and safety to the abuse of equine drugs to the full.

The Person: You’ll need to have the highest standards of integrity, a sharp eye and the ability to write clear, concise reports. We’ll need to train you, particularly in investigation techniques, so you should be flexible and a quick learner.

Entry Requirements: You’ll come from an equestrian background and will have a full driving licence.

Betting Investigator/Analyst

The Job: You’ll investigate and research the betting exchanges to help pinpoint malpractice. Whether you’re monitoring market movements, developing investigative leads, or advising our officers and those of other agencies, your expertise will help keep the Bookmaking industry on the straight and narrow.

The Person: You have great communication skills and combine plenty of initiative with the ability to work well in a team.

Entry Requirements: You’ll need a substantial amount of experience in the betting industry with an in-depth knowledge of on and off course markets and betting exchanges. You’ve also used IT systems and databases relevant to the betting industries.

Weighing Room Security Officer

The Job: You’ll ensure the highest level of security is operating in the Weighing Room at all times – so helping uphold the integrity of racing. From directing the team in the Weighing Room to controlling access and reporting infringements of rules, it’s a highly responsible job.

The Person: It’s vital you have the really strong personal skills necessary to deal tactfully with people from a range of backgrounds. You also need the highest levels of integrity, real self-motivation and a willingness to travel widely between racecourses.

Entry Requirements: You’ll need some management experience and a mind that can quickly absorb the relevant British Horseracing Authority rules.
