Management Courses in Racing
Becoming a Head Lad
As part of training to become a Head Lad, we’d recommend that you complete a course in managing staff. The British Racing School provides a 2 day Supervisory Skills programme that prepares you well for your new responsibilities. Click here for more information.
Becoming a Racehorse Trainer
Before the British Horseracing Authority will give you a Licence to Train, you’ll need to attend three one week modules held at the British Racing School. For a Permit to Train, you only need to complete Module 1. You must have your NVQ Level 3 in Racehorse Care and Management to start this module. Click here to find out more about getting this NVQ.
Module 1 – Racehorse Management: The course will give you an insight into horse health, feeding and nutrition, training & fitness and licensing/racecourse procedures, with expert speakers on each topic.
Module 2 - Business Skills for Racehorse Trainers: You'll learn the general business skills needed to run a successful racehorse training business. You'll also find out about business planning, obtaining finance, accounting principles, business law, marketing and media skills.
Module 3 - Staff Management: This module will equip you with the important information and skills needed to recruit, employ and manage people. With the increasing complexity of employment regulations and competition for staff this is vital. You'll also receive essential guidance on your Health and Safety obligations as an employer.
The British Horseracing Authority Licensing Committee may, in exceptional circumstances, grant exemption from Module 2 if you can prove you’ve already got substantial experience or qualifications in the relevant areas.
For more information on getting your licence to train contact the licensing department at the British Horseracing Authority. For details of dates and application forms for the Modules contact The British Racing School.

British Racing Industry Course: This week long course is aimed at those already working at middle management level within racing, bookmaking or associated industries.
