CAREERS GO RACING OWNING & BREEDING INSIDE HORSERACING
Entry level training Triumph. Passion. Prospects.

Breeding

If you’ve decided that you want to work with horses but don't necessarily want to ride, train for a career in the breeding industry. You’ll get involved with everything from handling foals and mares to mucking out, grooming and exercising in hand. As you become more expert, you’ll also assist with coverings (the technical term for the mating process), sit up to help with foalings and attend large horse sales where as many as 2,500 horses may be sold every year, some for hundreds of thousands of pounds.

The training is open for anyone who wishes to apply, and is free for all EU citizens aged between 16 and 25. You won’t need any formal qualifications – but you will need to like animals, love being outdoors and not be afraid of hard work. You should also be happy to live away from home.

The structure of your course looks like this:

  • A residential Induction Course (If you have no experience with horses)
  • Work placement at a Stud with continual assessment

Ultimately you will achieve an NVQ 2 in Racehorse Care (Breeding Option).

You could choose to complete your course at the prestigious National Stud or undertake a non-residential, working based training course with a provider such as Haddon Training - Or click here to see a list of approved centres.
