The BHA's Twenty to Follow
Here are full details of our selections this year
Overdose
4 Year Old Colt
Trainer: Sandor Ribarszki
Usual Jockey: Christophe Soumillon
Owner: MIKO Racing-Zoltan Mikoczy

What we said: Hungary might not seem the most obvious country for one of the most talked about horses in Europe to be trained, but neither was Spain where Equiano was based before winning the 2008 King’s Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot. That race is one of Overdose’s main targets this year.

At the time of writing ‘Dozi’ is unbeaten in 12 races by a total winning distance of 104 lengths. Whether that should be 13 races, including the annulled Prix de L’Abbaye in October, which was re-run later that day following a false start, is still open to debate.

Overdose made his seasonal reappearance with a facile win in Hungary in mid-April, partnered by his new regular pilot Christophe Soumillon.

This summer he will take on Marchand d’Or and others for the title of Europe’s Champion Sprinter.

He already has his own website, set up by his ever-growing fan club and according to which he will be seen next at Haydock on 23rd May for the Temple Stakes before heading to Royal Ascot.

The story so far:
Date Course Distance Race Position Odds
19th April Kincsem Park 5f (Good) OTP Hungarian Nagydij 1/8 ?

Conduit
4 Year old Colt
Trainer: Sir Michael Stoute
Usual Jockey: Ryan Moore
Owner: Ballymacoll Stud

What we said: Conduit first took the eye winning the opening handicap on Derby day in 2008. He was 12 lengths off the lead with less than half a mile to race before quickening impressively to beat Ramona Chase by 6 lengths.

That was his last run in handicap company and he was arguably unlucky to be beaten in the King Edward VII at Royal Ascot a fortnight later. He then won his next three races including the St Leger and the Breeders’ Cup Turf.

Sir Michael Stoute’s previous two winners of the Breeders’ Cup Turf, namely Pilsudski and Kalanisi, were both 4 year olds, so given the improvement that his trainer’s horses usually find between 3 and 4 it is likely that Conduit will be highly competitive in all the major middle distances races in 2009.

The story so far:
Date Course Distance Race Position Odds
28th May Sandown Park 1m 2f (Good) Brigadier Gerard Stakes (Group 3) 2/12 11/4
4th July Sandown Park 1m 2f (Good) Coral Eclipse (Group 1) 3/10 9/2
25th July Ascot 1m 4f (Good) King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes (Group 1) 1/9 13/8F
4th October Longchamp 1m 4f (Good) Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe (Group 1) 4/19 8/1

Crowded House
3 Year Old Colt
Trainer: Brian Meehan
Usual Jockey: Jamie Spencer
Owner: J P Reddam, Mrs Carmen Burrell, J Harvey

What we said: Brian Meehan must be looking forward to 2009 more than any previous season because he currently trains the favourites for both 2000 Guineas and Derby in the shape of Delegator and Crowded House respectively.

Having finished second to subsequent Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf winner Donativum in a valuable sales race at Newmarket, next time out, despite swerving left on the run in this son of Rainbow Quest won the Group 1 Racing Post Trophy at Doncaster in October quickening in impressive fashion.

That race has already produced three Derby winners since 2001 and Crowded House could well make it a fourth in nine years.

It is intended that he will make his seasonal debut in the Dante Stakes at York in mid-May, a race which was the stepping stone for three of the last five Derby winners. The story so far:
Date Course Distance Race Position Odds
14th May york 1m 2f (Good) totesport.com Dante Stakes (Group 2) 8/10 2/1F
6th June Epsom 1m 4f (Good) The Investec Epsom Derby (Group 1) 6/12 20/1

Yeats
8 Year Old Horse
Trainer: Aidan O’Brien
Usual Jockey: Johnny Murtagh
Owner: Mrs John Magnier & Mrs David Nagle

What we said: Multiple winners of the Ascot Gold Cup are not unusual, but before last year the only horse to have won the race three times since it was first run in 1807 was Sagaro.

Yeats was ante-post favourite for the 2004 Derby, before that challenge was ruled out by muscle problems in the month before the race. However, he has come into his own over staying distances by winning 10 of his 14 starts since the 2006 Ascot Gold Cup.

He is due to begin his latest campaign started in the Listed Vintage Crop Stakes at Navan, but it is usually mid-June when he comes into his own and arguably the best stayer of his generation could cement his place in history on Ladies’ Day in 2009, when he attempts to follow up his Ascot Gold Cup wins in 2006, 2007 and 2008.

The story so far:
Date Course Distance Race Position Odds
26th April Navan 1m 5f (Soft) Vintage Crop Stakes (Listed) 6/8 4/5F
18th June Ascot 2m 4f (Good to Firm) Ascot Gold Cup (Group 1) 1/9 6/4F
12th September Curragh 1m 6f (Soft) Irish St. Leger (Group 1) 8/8 4/1
4th September Longchamp 2m 4f (Good) Qatar Prix du Cadran (Group 1) 3/12 4/1

Rip Van Winkle
3 Year Old Colt
Trainer: Aidan O’Brien
Usual Jockey: Johnny Murtagh
Owner: Mrs John Magnier, Mr M.Tabor & Mr D.Smith

What we said: Although the form book shows that Rip Van Winkle has won two of his three races to date, he has only once been first past the post, having been awarded his Maiden win after the disqualification of Tomas An Tsioda in a 15 runner Maiden at the Curragh in June.

He then beat the high-class filly Cuis Ghaire in a Group 3 at Leopardstown before being sent off favourite in the Group 1 Dewhurst. He was held up at the back, but could not land a blow, finishing 7th behind Intense Focus.

However, despite suffering a training setback earlier in the year which meant that he missed over a month’s training, much is expected of this son of Galileo in 2009.

The story so far:
Date Course Distance Race Position Odds
2nd May Newmarket 8f (Good to Firm) stanjames.com 2000 Guineas (Group 1) 4/15 9/2
6th June Epsom 1m 4f (Good) The Investec Epsom Derby (Group 1) 4/12 6/1
4th July Sandown park 1m 2f (Good) Coral Eclipse (Group 1) 2/10 11/2
29th July Goodwood 1m (Good) BGC Sussex Stakes (Group 1) 1/8 6/4F
26th September Ascot 1m (Good to Firm) Queen Elizabeth II Stakes (Group 1) 1/5 8/13F

Cygnet
3 Year Old Colt
Trainer: Luca Cumani
Usual Jockey: Dane O’Neill
Owner: Lady Milford Haven & The Hon Mrs Steel

What we said: Having finished only 10th on his debut at Sandown in August 2008, Cygnet did not race again until mid-October when he battled well to beat Union Island in a mile Maiden at Nottingham with Jedi, who won next time out in third.

It is hoped that Cygnet will continue his progression this season to prove that he is no ugly duckling.

The story so far:
Date Course Distance Race Position Odds
16th September Yarmouth 1m 2f (Good to Firm) Golden Jubilee Trophy Handicap 2/10 9/2

Desert Creek
3 Year Old Colt
Trainer: Sir Michael Stoute
Usual Jockey: Ryan Moore
Owner: Mr Saeed Suhail

What we said: Desert Creek made his debut in mid-October. A 2nd place at Windsor was followed up two weeks later over 7 furlongs at Yarmouth by victory when he responded readily in the soft ground to beat Yirga by 3¼ lengths.

His breeding suggests that races over middle distances should be within his compass this year.

The story so far:
Date Course Distance Race Position Odds
4th May Windsor 8f (Good to Firm) Wycombe Wanderers FC Handicap 1/11 7/4F
23rd May Haydock 8f (Heavy) Betfred Silver Bowl (Heritage Handicap) 1/15 5/4F
18th June Ascot 8f (Good to Firm) Britannia Stakes (Heritage Handicap) 21/30 8/1
25th July Ascot 1m (Good) Emirates NBD Cup (Heritage Handicap) 5/11 3/1F

Fantasia
3 Year Old Filly
Trainer: Luca Cumani
Usual Jockey: Frankie Dettori
Owner: Mr George Strawbridge

What we said: Fantasia only met with defeat once in 2008 when she was 2nd to Rainbow View in the Fillies’ Mile at Ascot in September.

Subsequent to that run she was purchased by George Strawbridge, who also owns Rainbow View, so although the two fillies will be kept apart when Rainbow View tackles the 1000 Guineas whilst Fantasia is aimed at the French equivalent, it is to be hoped that they will meet sooner rather than later, perhaps in the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot.

The story so far:
Date Course Distance Race Position Odds
15th April Newmarket 7f (Good to Firm) Nell Gwynn Stakes (Group 3) 1/11 4/5F
10th May Longchamps 8f (Good) French 1,000 Guineas (Group 1) 3/11 6/5F
14th June Chantilly 1m 3f (Good to Soft) French Oaks (Group 1) 7/12 17/2
10th September Doncaster 7f (Good to Firm) Sceptre Stakes (Listed) 1/10 5/6F
3rd October Newmarket 8f (Good to Firm) Kingdom of Bahrain Sun Chariot Stakes (Group 1) 6/8 6/1

Foolin Myself
4 Year Old Colt
Trainer: Michael Bell
Usual Jockey: Jamie Spencer
Owner: Mr W. J. Gredley

What we said: Formerly trained by Barry Hills, Foolin Myself was off the racecourse for the whole of 2008. He reappeared in a 10 furlong handicap at Newbury in April, travelling well for a mile before fading into fourth.

Considering he beat subsequent Derby second Tartan Bearer as a 2-year-old there could be a lot more to come from him this season.

The story so far:
Date Course Distance Race Position Odds
2nd May Newmarket 9f (Good to Firm) stanjames.com Suffolk Stakes (Heritage Handicap) 12/15 11/2F
5th June Epsom 1m 2f (Good) The Investec Challenge (Heritage Handicap) PU/10 6/1
13th June York 1m 1f (Good) Ladbrokes.com Stakes Handicap 18/20 16/1
24th July Ascot 1m (Good) Nationwide Accident Repair Services Handicap 2/15 14/1
27th August Southwell 1m (Standard) Membership of Southwell Golf Club Handicap 1/13 7/2F
19th September Wolverhampton 1m 1f (Standard) Play Vegas Games Conditions Stakes 6/11 9/2
16th October Newmarket 7f (Good) Spreadex.com Handicap 16/17 12/1

Gladiatorus
4 Year Old Colt
Trainer: Saeed bin Suroor
Usual Jockey: Frankie Dettori
Owner: Godolphin

What we said: Trained in Italy as a 2-year-old where he won five of his nine starts including 4 Listed races, Gladiatorus did not see a racecourse in 2008.

He made up for lost time at the Dubai Carnival in January when taking a 7½ furlong handicap by 2½ lengths breaking the course record in the process. He then stepped up to Group 2 company where he won by 5¾ lengths.

The manner of his only Group 1 victory to date on Dubai World Cup night was eye catching due to the way that he relentlessly galloped away from his opponents.

Further Group 1 success looks sure to follow, either over a mile or 10 furlongs and he could begin his British campaign in the Lockinge at Newbury in May.

The story so far:
Date Course Distance Race Position Odds
16th June Ascot 1m (Good to Firm) Queen Anne Stakes (Group 1) 6/9 9/4F
16th August Deauville 1m (Good) Prix du Haras de Fresnay-Le-Buffard Jacques Le Marois (Group 1) 8/9 54/10
6th September Longchamp 1m (Good to Soft) Prix du Moulin du Longchamp (Group 1) 5/9 14/1
11th October San Siro 1m (Soft) Prima Vittoria du Capua (Group 1) 1/11 9/5F

Invisible Man
3 Year Old Colt
Trainer: John Gosden
Usual Jockey: Jimmy Fortune
Owner: H. R. H. Princess Haya of Jordan

What we said: Having started warm favourite for both the races he has run in so far, on the face of it a 3rd and 4th place could be regarded as disappointing.

However, following his second run in a competitive Maiden at the Craven meeting he retained some eye catching entries in major races this summer which indicates that he is still highly regarded by his connections.

He could well land a decent race at around a mile during the season.

The story so far:
Date Course Distance Race Position Odds
4th May Kempton (A/W) 8f (Standard) williamhill.com Maiden Stakes 4/13 6/4F
16th May Newmarket 8f (Good to Firm) betinternet.com Maiden Stakes 1/12 5/4F
18th June Ascot 8f (Good to Firm) Britannia Stakes (Heritage Handicap) 13/30 25/1
11th July Ascot 7f (Good to Firm) totescoop 6 Stakes (Heritage Handicap) 4/10 5/1
25th July Newmarket 1m (Good) Sportingbet (Handicap) 1/8 100/30J
16th August Pontefract 1m (Good to Firm) Nova Display Anniversary (Handicap) 1/8 2/1F
12th September Goodwood 1m 1f (Good to Firm) Countryside Alliance Stakes (Handicap) 9/9 13/8F

Laudatory
3 Year old Colt
Trainer: Walter Swinburn
Usual Jockey: Adam Kirby
Owner: Mr P. W. Harris

What we said: Laudatory has yet to run anywhere other than the 7 furlong straight at Kempton, but having been 2nd on his debut beaten 6 lengths, he has not put a foot wrong in his other two starts.

His Maiden win in November was followed by taking a handicap on his seasonal reappearance in April.

He is bred for sprint distances and if building on his experience could well win a decent turf sprint during the season.

The story so far:
Date Course Distance Race Position Odds
11th April Kempton (A/W) 7f (Standard) oddschecker.com (Handicap) 1/12 100/30JF
9th May Lingfield 7f (Good to Firm) totesportgames.com (Handicap) 4/8 5/4F
25th May Goodwood 1m (Good to Firm) Horsewalk Restaurant (Handicap) 3/11 5/2F
12th June Sandown 1m (Good) Mousetrap Challenge Cup (Handicap) 8/10 11/2
1st August Newmarket 7f (Good) sportingbet.com Handicap 4/14 16/1
14th August Kempton 8f (Standard) Oddschecker.com Handicap 4/9 7/2
4th September Kempton 8f (Standard) Weatherbys Printing Apprentice Handicap (Final Round) 4/11 3/1J
16th Semptember Kempton 8f (Standard) Levy Board Handicap 2/13 13/2
5th October Pontefract 8f (Good to Firm) Trinidad and Tobago Handicap 6/6 5/1

Leocorno
3 Year Old Filly
Trainer: Sir Michael Stoute
Usual Jockey: Ryan Moore
Owner: Ballymacoll Stud

What we said: Leocorno has only raced once to date when she made her debut in a traditionally strong 15 runner fillies’ maiden at Doncaster in October beating Queen Eleanor by ¾ length.

The winning distance could have been further if she had not found herself behind a wall of horses early in the straight and there should be much more to come from this rangy filly.

Her mother was the dam of Golan and Tartan Bearer, both of whom filled the runners up spot in the Derby. Their half sister could well go one better in the Oaks.

The story so far:
Date Course Distance Race Position Odds
21st May Sandown 9f (Good to Firm) Panmure Gordon Stockbroking Fillies Handicap 1/9 8/11F
18th June Ascot 1m 4f (Good to Firm) Ribblesdale Stakes (Group 2) 4/10 15/8F
20th August York 1m 4f (Good to Firm) Galtres Stakes (Listed) 2/9 11/4F
16th October Newmarket 1m 2f (Good) Severals Stakes (Listed) 8/12 9/4F

Negotiation
3 Year Old Colt
Trainer: John Gosden
Usual Jockey: Jimmy Fortune
Owner: H. R. H. Princess Haya of Jordan

What we said: Unraced at 2 years old, Negotiation made his debut over 7 furlongs at Kempton towards the end of March finishing 3rd.

He then won a mile Maiden at Yarmouth in April beating Palacefield by 1½ lengths, with the widely touted Dream Win who started 11/10 favourite back in 5th.

He could improve further still if stepped up in distance.

The story so far:
Date Course Distance Race Position Odds
13th April Yarmouth 8f (Good) toteplacepot Maiden Stakes 1/9 9/2
29th July Sandown 8f (Good) Drivers Jonas Handicap 2/5 5/4F
15th August Newmarket 8f (Good to Firm) Skysports.com/Super 6 Handicap 1/7 5/1
30th August Goodwood 9f (Good to Firm) South Coast Stakes 10/13 3/1JF

Raaeidd
3 Year Old Colt
Trainer: Michael Jarvis
Usual Jockey: Philip Robinson
Owner: Sheikh Ahmed Al Maktoum

What we said: Raaiedd started off his career in a 6 furlong maiden at Newmarket on good to soft ground where he was beaten by the more speedily bred Catskill Mountain.

He started favourite for his next race at Kempton over 7 furlongs, where after making hard work of the early stages he beat Aurora Sky by a comfortable ¾ length.

He has scope for improvement which may come when tackling races at a mile or further.

The story so far:
Date Course Distance Race Position Odds
13th May York 1m 2f (Good to Firm) Moortown Golf Club Centenary Stakes (Class 4) 3/20 4/1
4th July Sandown Park 1m 2f (Good) Charles Leahy Memorial Handicap 5/8 2/1F
18th July Ripon 1m 1f (Soft) Sky Bet Supporting the Yorkshire Racing Festival Handicap 4/12 4/1
31st July Newmarket 8f (Good) Route VK Handicap 4/10 7/2
31st August Epsom 8f (Good to Firm) Tompkins and May Partnership Void Management Handicap 8/11 9/2
Shamali
4 Year Old Colt
Trainer: William Haggas
Usual Jockey: Tony Culhane
Owner: Mr Abdulla Al Khalifa

What we said: Sent off at odds-on for his third appearance in a race that on the face of it appeared to lack much strength-in-depth following two promising runs, this powerful looking son of Selkirk beat subsequent winner Spouk by 3¾ lengths.

He is well regarded by his yard and could run well in races over a mile this year.

The story so far:
Date Course Distance Race Position Odds
28th May Sandown Park 1m (Good) Whitsun Cup Handicap 8/13 9/1
12th June Sandown Park 1m 2f (Good) totesportcasino.com Handicap 3/12 10/1
11th July Ascot 1m 2f (Good to Firm) Euro Earthwords Handicap 1/11 7/2
26th July Ascot 1m 2f (Good) Sodexo Prestige Classified Stakes 1/4 1/2F

South Easter
3 Year Old Colt
Trainer: William Haggas
Usual Jockey: Neil Callan
Owner: Markus Jooste & Bernard Kantor

What we said: Despite reportedly working well during 2008, this half-brother to dual purpose performer First Buddy was deemed too backwards to make his debut at 2 years old.

When he did eventually see a racecourse at Newbury in April, he was sent off at 16/1 for a mile Maiden. After getting loose on the way to the start he ran prominently before being beaten ¾ length into second by the well-backed favourite in the shape of the more experienced Border Patrol.

He should be able to build on that first run and could be a very interesting prospect over a mile and a half or further as the season progresses.

The story so far:
Date Course Distance Race Position Odds
18th April Newbury 8f (Soft) Dubai International Airport Maiden Stakes 2/12 16/1
8th May Chester 1m 2 & 1/2f (Good to Firm) Addleshaw Goddard Dee Stakes (Group 3) 1/7 6/1
19th June Ascot 1m 4f (Good to Firm) King Edward VII (Group 2) 6/12 7/2F

Stone of Scone
4 Year Old Colt
Trainer: Ed Dunlop
Usual Jockey: Ryan Moore
Owner: Cliveden Stud

What we said: Nominated as his trainer’s horse to follow in 2008, Stone of Scone is a half-brother to Group 1 winner Mount Nelson.

Although he was restricted to just two races as a 3 year-old due to suffering a setback after he won a Great Leighs Maiden by 2½ lengths in May 2008, the enforced break may have been beneficial, because he is a big horse who may now have had time to grow into his frame.

It seems likely that his potential as a quality middle distance performer may be far from fulfilled.

The story so far:
Date Course Distance Race Position Odds
28th April Nottingham 1m 2f (Good to Soft) Turf TV Handicap 1/13 12/1
13th May York 1m 2f (Good to Firm) Blue Square Casino Stakes (Class 2) 3/11 5/1
19th June Ascot 1m 2f (Good to Firm) Wolferton Handicap (Listed) 15/15 7/2F

Tasheba
4 Year Old Gelding
Trainer: Nicky Henderson
Usual Jockey:
Owner: Mr Terry Benson

What we said: Whilst you may expect a “Jump horses to follow” list to include a Nicky Henderson trained horse it may seem less obvious for one of his charges to appear in a list of Flat horses to follow.

However, after winning at Cheltenham towards the end of the Jump season, Tasheba may be able to build on his two previous Flat wins for Peter Chapple-Hyam in staying races on the Flat this summer.

The story so far:
Date Course Distance Race Position Odds
20th June Ascot 2m 6f (Good to Firm) Queen Alexandra Stakes 4/10 100/30F

Wells Lyrical
4 Year Old Colt
Trainer: Bryan Smart
Usual Jockey: Tom Eaves
Owner: Mr M. Barber

What we said: Bryan Smart is better known for handling speedier types than Wells Lyrical, but his entries in some of this summer’s major staying races suggest that this son of Sadler’s Wells is highly regarded.

Having taken six attempts to record his first win, he has now won his last three races, including a 14 furlong Handicap at Doncaster in October.

Even if he does not quite make the top grade he looks sure to develop into a very good stayer.

The story so far:
Date Course Distance Race Position Odds
25th April Ripon 2m (Good to Firm) totetentofollow.co.uk Handicap 2/9 4/1
27th June Newcastle 2m (Soft) John Smiths Northumberland Plate (Heritage Handicap) 2/17 15/2
4th July Sandown Park 2m (Good) Coral Marathon (Esher Stakes) (Listed Race) 3/6 5/1
1st October Ayr 1m 5f (Good to Firm) victorchandler.com Handicap 6/6 2/1F
17th October Newmarket 2m 2f (Good) totesport.com Cesarewich (Heritage Handicap) 19/32 20/1
