Where interference has occurred during a race, if the interference involved placed horses and the placings of the race may be altered, an enquiry is called under Rule 171 (iii) and the claxon is sounded across the racecourse. This advises bookmakers not to pay out until the result of the enquiry is announced, and also makes the punters aware that they should hold on to their tickets as a result could be altered.

Where interference has occurred during the race and the Stewards do not consider the result will be changed, no claxon is sounded and the enquiry takes place after the weighed-in signal, enabling bookmakers to pay out on the result and punters to collect.
