THE PROJECT BOARD
A formal Board of directors has been established to provide industry leadership and oversee the direction for the project.
The Racing for Change Board features all of the sport’s key organisations and includes not only representation from the racecourses and the participants, but also the Horserace Betting Levy Board and the British Horseracing Authority, the bodies with responsibility for funding (HBLB), governance and regulation (BHA).
This is the first time where all facets of the racing industry have come together under one umbrella with the commitment to pursue wide reaching and ambitious change for the wider good.
The nine-person board will be chaired by Chris McFadden, Chairman of Racing Enterprises Ltd (REL), and as well senior representatives within racing it will include two external non-executive directors with blue chip consumer experience – recognising the sport’s need to better understand the broader market.
Chris McFadden, Chairman of REL and the Racing for Change Board, said: “Racing for Change will be led by Racing Enterprises Limited, but the project board is made up of those parts of the industry who can actually deliver the changes. Key to our work will be the appointment to the Board of two people with a strong consumer industry background. These non-executive appointments are expected to be announced later in the year.”
Nic Coward, Chief Executive of the British Horseracing Authority, said: “The creation of the Racing for Change project board is an important step forward. The success of this project depends on the all parts of the industry working together to bring about much needed change.
“Recent news on the downturn in Levy income highlights the urgency required to address aspects of our industry’s structure and to question some of the strategies we currently pursue. If we want to succeed we have to demonstrate the collective courage to cope with some challenging moments along the way – an inevitable part of the change process.”
Rod Street, Project director for REL and Racing for Change said: “The scale of the task is enormous, especially when one considers how many composite parts make up what we call the racing and breeding industry. It is folly to think will we agree on everything but, as demonstrated by feedback from the road shows we hosted all over Britain we have any army of positive people who want to help us move things forward.”
The Racing for Change project board:

- Stephen Smith, Horsemen's Group and ROA Council

- Ian Barlow, Chairman, Racecourse Association
