Trainers' Licences

The Licensing Team administers the annual licensing process for Trainers.

The majority of trainers hold a Combined Licence, allowing them to train horses for Flat and Jump races. However individuals may also apply for a Jump or Flat only Licence.

Licences are issued on an annual basis, with the current licence period due to expire on 31st January 2014.

New Licence Applications

Full details regarding the criteria for a Trainers Licence are detailed in the Guidance Notes, above. However in order to have an application for a Trainer’s Licence considered by the BHA applicants will normally have to demonstrate at least the following:

  • A minimum of 5 years experience in training establishments including at least 2 years in a responsible and senior position preferably as an Assistant Trainer in a successful racing yard; or
  • A track record as a Permit holder consisting of at least 3 wins with a reasonable spread of horses; or
  • Running a Point to Point yard for at least 2 years and having achieved a minimum of 10 Point to Point/Hunter Chase wins with a reasonable spread of horses.
  • Attainment of NVQ Level 3 in Racehorse Care and Management
  • Attendance on and successful completion of 3 one week courses at either the British Racing School or Northern Racing College (as detailed in the Training Modules)
  • Attendance at a one day seminar at Weatherbys (details to be found in the application packs, above)
The application should also be supported by:

  • References
  • A business plan
  • Leases or agreements for the use of the yard and facilities
  • A satisfactory inspection of the yard and facilities by a British Horseracing Authority Stable Inspector
  • A financial reference to confirm individuals have working capital or overdraft facilities in the region of £40,000
  • A satisfactory background check in regards to an applicant’s suitability
A licence will normally only be granted to those with at least 3 horses in training.

Once all of the criteria have been met, the BHA may require the applicant to meet with the Licensing Committee for an interview, where it would expect the applicant to demonstrate a thorough knowledge of racehorses and racing, along with the leadership and management skills required to run a successful business and an understanding of the Rules of Racing.
